At Future Focus College Consulting, LLC, we have over thirty years of experience in shepherding students and their loved ones through the college search, selection, application and funding processes. If we've learned nothing else, we know absolutely that this is a family process not just a student focused one.
While it might seem unnecessary to begin college discussions this early, there are several ways that your college counselor relationship can benefit you starting in 9th grade. Your counselor can help you explore career interests and set academic goals as well as provide guidance on selecting the best fit courses, extracurricular activities and volunteer opportunities to build a strong resume. It is never too early to set your plans for future success in motion. Meetings with your counselor will take place on a quarterly basis.
In tenth grade your counselor will help you refine your academic and extracurricular choices to align with your future college goals. Your counselor will help you plan out strategies for standardized testing and introduce you to summer programs, internships and leadership opportunities to enhance your college applications. Meetings with your counselor will take place twice each quarter.
During your junior year of high school your counselor will work with you to build a balanced list of colleges to consider based on your academic performance, interests and goals. They will provide further guidance on standardized testing as well as assist with planning college visits, drafting personal statements, and securing strong recommendation letters. By the end of this year you will have a clear sense of the path ahead and exactly what steps to take to secure your place at your best fit college or university. Meetings with your counselor will take place monthly or more often if needed/preferred.
During your senior year your college counselor will help you with a whole host of important details that will help you to create the best application and yield the best outcomes on your path to college. These include but are not limited too the following:
Meetings will typically take place on a weekly or bi-weekly basis July - December and then as needed through May 1 of the senior year.
